The nature of Huelva: in abundance
Punta Umbria is remarkable by its varied ecosystem formed by Odiel Marshes Natural Site (one of the most outstanding wetlands in Spain), the Enebrales (consisting of juniper-trees, pine trees and Sabina trees and a rich and varied fauna), the Portil Lagoon Natural Reserve (formed by the enclosure of streams produced by the intervention of mobile dunes), and, soon, the Canaleta dune park. Actually, 70% of Punta Umbria´s territory is a protected area.
Odiel Marshes Natural Site has been classified by the UNESCO as Biosphere Reserve, constituting one of the most important wetland ecosystems in Spain. It is the habitat for important bird colonies such as the spoonbill and the grey heron and it can be visited with organised tours with guides that start in their reception and interpreting centre.
Another great natural site is the Enebrales spot, constituted by a long line of dunes parallel to the beach where you will be able to find juniper trees, bushes with narrow leaves which are usually the favourite habitat of chameleons. The area can be explored by bicycle using one of the best cycleways in Andalucía or by foot walking through the many pedestrian paths around it.
Last but not least we find El Portil lagoon natural reserve, located very close to the neighbouring municipality of Cartaya. This area provides shelter for an important colony of aquatic birds and it is surrounded by a rich vegetation which abounds in pine trees and brooms that also have a good number of vegetal species.
Apart from this, it is remarkable the closeness of Punta Umbria to Doñana National Park, one of the most significant natural environments in Europe.
