The centuries-old relationship between Punta Umbría and the sea has its origins in times of the Romans. Since then, it has extended in time and forged the particular character of the village in a way its idiosyncrasy can not be understood without this relationship. The fishing tradition of this village far away from being forgotten is very present in its daily life, being the sea a source of sustenance, leisure and idiosyncracy for the inhabitants of the town.
The very origin of the town goes back to the fact that the first dwellers were fishermen devoted to fishing or picking shellfish in the countless marshes who sought refuge building their houses around Torre Umbría tower.
Nowadays, fishing together with tourism constitutes one of the central themes of the economy of the village. This can be perfectly observed when we walk around the fishing quay and the fish market , where the best restaurants of the area look for the best seafood for their tables.
